October is Filipino American History Month. This month-long celebration commemorates the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the United States, which occurred on October 18, 1587, when “Luzones Indios” landed at what is now Morro Bay, California. FAHM honors the history, pursuits, accomplishments, and legacy of Filipinos in the United States.

SHFT is proud to be a Filipino American owned business making strides in supporting and connecting communities in Daly City and the SF Bay Area.

SHFT’S FILIPINO AMERICAN TEAM MEMBERS:

What is SHFT’s Filipino American History?

Dr. Joseph Jayme, founder, owner, and chiropractor of SHFT is a first generation Filipino American. He carries on the legacy his paternal Filipino grandfather, Demetrio S. Jayme. Mr. Jayme fought with the United States during WWII and immigrated to America with his young family. He established a successful business, the North American Maritime Agency shipping company - the US based branch of the Maritime Company of the Philippines. He also promoted long term relationships between San Francisco City and Manila.

Dr. Joe was raised in San Francisco carrying the mixed cultural identity of a true Filipino American. “Growing up as a Fil-Am, my cultural identity was so mixed that it carried traditions of the US military combined with Filipino food, tough love, family and religious traditions. My place in the world was to follow the footsteps of my grandfather, dad, mom, and brothers which was to establish relationships, develop skills, and carry on the traditions of the Jayme Family.”

Today, Dr. Joe carries on the tradition of the Jayme family by continuing to establish business relationships with Filipino businesses and hopes to create future partnerships with the Philippines including a mission trip. As one mission representative commented, “you’re considered a *hilot dude, so we are just trying to figure out how we can make your mission happen.”

*“Hilot" is a traditional Filipino healing art that uses massage, herbs, and intuition to address physical and emotional ailments.
